Rhetorical Essay Using Rhetoric - 958 Words

Using rhetoric to make an argument has been very crucial to my writing in the past couple of months. From Project 1 to Project 3, I learned to form my sentences using rhetorical strategies to make my argument. In the project 1, my use of rhetoric was above average in my opinion. My essay responded to the question of what good writing is. I used clear sentences and many examples to make my point. To explain the idea that good writing has no rules, I used the unstructured format of Whitehead’s text. I wrote that Whitehead did not follow common and basic rules for writing such as having an introductory and concluding paragraphs; however, his writing can be considerate as good because he accomplished his initial goal of convincing the readers that writing is rule free. I learned that being specific in my writing was crucial especially when the topic question is so broad. In my rough draft, I was not specific enough, leaving the readers wondering what I meant by the â€Å"No Rules† rule but I revised that in the final draft and included a few specific examples to make my argument clearer. One thing that I notice in my first project is that I was very repetitive all throughout. I kept saying the same thing over and over in different words, which did not add anything to my argument. Instead, it filled my essay with empty paragraphs that I had to get rid of when writing the final draft. I believe that I have improved on that because I did not notice this problem in my other projects.Show MoreRelatedHow Rhetoric Is Required For Every College Student1566 Words   |  7 Pages Understanding how to use rhetoric is required for every college student in order for them to write an academic essay. James Watt Essay Example For Students

James Watt Essay JAMES WATT(17171800)James Watt, the son of a merchant, was born in Greenock, Scotland, in 1717. At the age of nineteen, Watt was sent to Glasgow to learn the trade of a mathematical-instrument maker. After spending a year in London, Watt returned to Glasgow in 1757 where he established his own instrument-making business. Watt soon developed a reputation as a high quality engineer and was employed on the Forth Clyde Canal and the Caledonian Canal. He was also engaged in the improvement of harbours and in the deepening of the Forth, Clyde and other rivers in Scotland. In 1763 Watt was sent a Newcomen steam engine to repair. While putting it back into working order, Watt discovered how he could make the engine more efficient. Watt worked on the idea for several months and eventually produced a steam engine that cooled the used steam in a condenser separate from the main cylinder. James Watt was not a wealthy man so he decided to seek a partner with money. John Roebuck, the owner of a Scottish ironworks, agreed to provide financial backing for Watts project. When Roebuck went bankrupt in 1773, Watt took his ideas to Matthew Boulton, a successful businessman from Birmingham. For the next eleven years Boultons factory producing and selling Watts steam-engines. These machines were mainly sold to colliery owners who used them to pump water from their mines. Watts machine was very popular because it was four times more powerful than those that had been based on the Thomas Newcomen design. Watt continued to experiment and in 1781 he produced a rotary-motion steam engine. Whereas his earlier machine, with its up-and-down pumping action, was ideal for draining mines, this new steam engine could be used to drive many different types of machinery. Richard Arkwright was quick to importance of this new invention, and in 1783 he began using Watts steam-engine in his textile factories. Others followed his lead and by 1800 there were over 500 of Watts machines in Britains mines and factories. In 1755 Watt had been granted a patent by Parliament that prevented anybody else from making a steam-engine like the one he had developed. For the next twenty-five years, the Boulton ; Watt company had a virtual monopoly over the production of steam-engines. Watt charged his customers a premium for using his steam engines. To justify this he compared his machine to a horse. Watt calculated that a horse exerted a pull of 180 lb., therefore, when he made a machine, he described its power in relation to a horse, (a 20 horse-power engine). Watt worked out how much each company saved by using his machine rather than a team of horses. The company then had to pay him one third of this figure every year, for the next twenty-five years. When James Watt died in 1800 he was a very wealthy man. Words/ Pages : 480 / 24

The story he told me made me feel even more grateful for everything I have. Throughout the story he told me that his family did not have much money at all and how he always had to work on the farm to help support the family and ending up dropping out of school in 9th grade. Nyasasaurus - Facts and Figures

Nyasasaurus - Facts and Figures Name: Nyasasaurus (Greek for Nyasa lizard); pronounced knee-AH-sah-SORE-us Habitat: Plains of southern Africa Historical Period: Early Triassic (243 million years ago) Size and Weight: About 10 feet long and 100 pounds Diet: Unknown; probably omnivorous Distinguishing Characteristics: Long, lithe build; exceptionally long tail About Nyasasaurus Announced to the world in December of 2012, Nyasasaurus is an exceptional find: a dinosaur that lived in the southern continent of Pangaea during the early Triassic period, about 243 million years ago. Why is this such stunning news? Well, scientists previously believed that the earliest true dinosaurs (such as Eoraptor and Herrerasaurus) arose in middle Triassic South America, at a remove of 10 million years and 1,000 or so miles. Theres still a lot we dont know about Nyasasaurus, but what we do know points to an unmistakably dinosaurian lineage. This reptile measured about 10 feet from head to tail, which may seem enormous by Triassic standards, except for the fact that fully five feet of that length was taken up by its unusually long tail. Like other early dinosaurs, Nyasasaurus clearly evolved from a recent archosaur ancestor, though it may have represented a dead end in dinosaur evolution (the true dinosaurs we all know and love still being descended from the likes of Eoraptor). One thing about Nyasasaurus that remains a mystery is this dinosaurs diet. The earliest dinosaurs preceded the historic split between saurischian and ornithischian varieties (saurischians were either carnivorous or herbivorous, and all ornithischians, as far as we know, were plant-eaters). It seems most likely that Nyasasaurus was omnivorous, and its descendants (if any) evolved in more specialized directions. It may yet turn out that Nyasasaurus is technically classified as an archosaur rather than a true dinosaur. This would not be an unusual development, since theres never a firm line that separates one type of animal from another in evolutionary terms (for example, which genus marks the transition from the most advanced lobe-finned fish to the earliest tetrapods, or the small, feathered, fluttery dinosaurs and the first true birds?)
